Transliteration

Transliteration is the systematic conversion of text from one writing system to another (script to script), preserving pronunciation rather than semantic meaning.

This technology is critical for global data integrity: it maps characters from a source script (e.g., Cyrillic, Hanzi) to a target script (typically Latin) based on phonetic equivalence. Unlike translation, the goal is not meaning conversion but script standardization, which is essential for global logistics and e-commerce. For example, Russian 'улица Свободы' becomes 'ulitsa Svobody' (Latin-based) for database consistency and automated sorting systems. Accurate transliteration ensures non-Latin addresses—like those in Moscow or Beijing—can be reliably processed, verified, and stored in Western databases, directly reducing delivery failures and enabling reliable geocoding.
